The colourful beauty of wood
Autumn is
one of the four colour seasons and is very well known for all those lovely rich
warm colours that cheer us so well before the long cold bleak days of winter are
with us again. November
can often be one of the dullest months colourwise, predominantly grey, after
the usual blue skies and cheerful sunshine so often found during October
creating such dazzlingly vivid autumn colours. But such a beautiful display of
nature's colour cannot last forever and soon all of those lovely leaves will
turn to compost. Yet even in the bleak of mid-winter, there is more colour to be
found if you know where to look - the
natural beauty and wonderful range of rich colours and patterns inside
the tree hidden and protected under the bark - the very wood itself.
Many of us appreciate the natural beauty and colour of wood and use it with good
effect in our homes. An old friend of mine, Nicholas Chandler, is one such
person, and has spent most of his life sculpting timber into beautiful
creations. Not only is Nicholas a skilled craftsman, but he is a teacher too,
and he organizes courses and willingly passes on his skills to others. Some of
his work is shown on this page but if you want to see more, why not visit his
new website which is to be found at: www.thechairdesigner.com
where you can also find out more about his work and the courses. If you are
looking for that special piece of furniture, in exactly the colours and grain
effect that you want, then Nicholas can be commissioned to make that individual
item especially for you. I just love the colours and reflections created
by this wonderful mirror, inspired by Juliet's balcony, Venice and its riverside
palazzos. It's just amazing how design ideas are born and colour certainly has a
huge impact and influence on our thoughts and moods. Just as a mirror reflects
another image, try moving your mouse over the images on this page and you will
see another reflection on colour!
And thoughts of the tree itself also set me thinking about
the natural beauty of the shape and colour of the tree. During the winter months
and at Christmas time in particular,
when trees are naturally at their barest, what do we do? Well, we set about colouring
them of course - with all manner of coloured lights, flashing lights, sequencing
lights indoor lights and outdoor lights too! Each year the displays become more
complex as more products become readily available and affordable. Clearly,
colour is important, even subconsciously, to many people and this is just one of
so many ways in which we can and do bring it into our lives.
