Colour
your wines...
Parties, meals, birthdays and New Year - any excuse for a delicious glass of
wine! How many New Years' resolutions and good intentions have you made along
the lines of: 'I'll never again touch alcohol' !!!
BUT wait...
Some good
news is at hand...
AND it all has to do with Flavonoids.
Flavonoids are the beneficial antioxidants found to varying degrees in many fruits and vegetables, particularly brightly coloured
RED and
GREEN veggies and fruits, including in the skins of
RED grapes.
The plot thickens!!
RED grapes can be eaten,
AND
more importantly... turned into RED wine!
RED grapes are fermented complete with their skins, hence the RED colour of the finished wine, and the flavonoids have made their way into the wine. Alas you
WHITE wine afficionadoes,
white wine tends to be pressed before fermentation, the resulting juice is fermented without the skins. So the resulting wine is lacking in flavonoids.
Flavonoids are beneficial antioxidants which have been found to help in reducing heart disease and strokes. There is an indication that they are have a part to play in slowing down Alzheimers, Parkinsons and other unpleasant and
degenerative diseases, as well as helping in the fight against some cancers.
Do all RED wines contain equal amounts of Flavonoids?
Sadly, no. As with fruits and vegetables, there are many variables which determine the amount of flavonoids in a bottle of wine, variety of grape, altitude, sunlight, temperature, ageing, preparation, all help determine levels.
However, research carried out by the University of Glasgow, Scotland, over
recent years has identified some Burgundies, Chiantis Sauvignons and Chilean reds that are particularly high in flavonoids.
SO...
A glass of RED wine may do you and your diet a great deal
more good than you realised!! Researchers have demonstrated that drinking red wine in moderation can prevent a whole range of illnesses. It can even help decrease the risk of strokes or heart attacks. As a result, sales of red wine
are currently booming. So, perhaps a glass of
RED wine a day, really does keep the
doctor away!
Colour affects every area of our lives it seems. Even wines! So now that you have
learned the value of RED wine, you'd best
get sipping some wine in the candlelight! But what if, like me, you prefer to drink
white
wine even though you know that RED wine is better for you,
or perhaps you just don't like the taste of RED wine? Well,
here is the solution! There are a few red
wines that taste like whites, even to some blindfolded experts! So why not try
one of these listed below. You may not find the vintage year shown but any year
would have the same effect! If you are in the UK we can even get you started
with a £20 off voucher from Virgin Wines if you order them online right here
and now - direct from Virgin Wines! Cheers!
